Newcastle United failed to bring Nicolai Jorgensen to the Premier League in January as Eredivisie champions Feyenoord reportedly refused to sell.

With Mike Ashley promising to back his manager in the summer transfer window, Rafa Benitez has made it clear exactly where he wants to spend those funds.

In quotes reported by the Independent, the Spaniard made it clear that he believes Newcastle need a prolific number nine, and hopes the club are willing to smash their £17 million transfer record that was set way back in 2005.

But could Nicolai Jorgensen, the man Newcastle tried and failed to sign in January, be the man to make history? The Daily Star (May 9, page 45) claimed that the Feyenoord target man is still on the Magpies’ radar and he has hardly played down speculation in an interview with Bold.dk.

“The plan was that I should be in Feyenoord for two years and develop myself as a football player. I think I’ve done that,” said Jorgensen, who admitted he was annoyed that a move to Newcastle fell through in January.

“The Premier League is the biggest challenge for all football players. It is the league where the pace is very high and it could also be fun to try to play there one day. If that happens, I do not know. But it is clear that it could be incredibly cool to try.”

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle failed with a £15 million bid for Jorgensen four months ago with Feyenoord demanding closer to £20 million for the Danish international.

He fired Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in 2017 with 21 goals in his debut season in Dutch football. But Jorgensen managed just 10 in 26 games last season as PSV Eindhoven seized back the crown.
