HITC Sport understands the Fleetwood Town defender is in talks with ambitious Salford City.

Salford City are closing in on an ambitious swoop for Fleetwood Town defender Nathan Pond, HITC Sport understands.

New Salford boss Graham Alexander is keen to bring in experienced defender Pond as his first signing since taking over at the National League new boys.

Alexander is a big fan of central defender Pond having worked with him during his time in charge of the League One club.

Pond is the longest-serving player at Fleetwood, having joined them from Lancaster City in 2003 and holds the club record for most appearances.

The Fleetwood club captain has been promoted from North West Counties League First Division to League One with Fleetwood.

Pond made 36 appearances in all competitions for Fleetwood last season, but new Cod Army boss Joey Barton is willing to let him move on.

Fleetwood are ready to let Pond leave for free as reward for his loyalty and service to the club.

The signing of Pond would be something of a coup for Salford in attracting a player to move from League One down to the National League.
