Michael Gregoritsch had never scored more than seven goals in a single first-team campaign until the start of the 2017/18 season.

But it’s fair to say the 24-year-old Austrian found his form over the last few months. Augsburg once again confounded the pre-season predictions by finishing comfortably in mid-table in the Bundesliga and Gregoritsch was the star of the show.

Alongside Iceland international Alfred Finnbogason, he fired Manuel Baum’s side to safety with a career-best 13 goals in 30 starts. One of those was a brilliant touch, turn and finish against Hertha Berlin, not incomparable to Denis Bergkamp in his pomp.

But while Bergkamp lit up Arsenal with his imitable style, Gregoritsch himself has been linked with a move to North London.

According to Sport Bild, Tottenham Hotspur have joined Leicester City, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach in challenging for the striker. And he has certainly given a boost to Spurs and Dortmund, admitting that he’d be tempted by the allure of the Champions League.

Now, Gregoritsch would arrive at Spurs under scrutiny as the last two strikers who were signed to challenge Harry Kane, Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente, crashed and burned.

And, with just one particularly impressive season under his belt, the potential signing of Gregoritsch could go one of two ways and Spurs would be hoping that Mauricio Pochettino can work his magic again to make this investment worthwhile.

But Gregoritsch, an intelligent and composed forward who has made quite remarkable strides in 2017/18, is a player on the up and Spurs have a habit of signing superstars-to-be.
