Tony Dorigo suggests that Leeds United need a player like Joey Barton.

Tony Dorigo has suggested to Betstars that Leeds United should sign a player of Joey Barton’s character in the summer transfer window.

Former Leeds defender Dorigo, who was on the books of the Whites from 1991 until 1997 and won the Football League First Division with the Elland Road outfit back in 1991-92, has suggested that the West Yorkshire outfit need a player like Barton.

The former Newcastle United and Rangers midfielder, who will take charge of Fleetwood Town this summer, was a very combative and energetic player during his playing career.

Dorigo told Betstars when asked what players he would like to have at Leeds: “Actually Joey Barton was a name that’s come up in the past – that sort of character that actually understands things and wakes things up a little bit and gets everyone going.

“We just haven’t got that. I watched the games, you see when things go wrong, things continue to go wrong – no one ever puts it right. I think that’s a big problem whereas someone with a bit more experience would sort that out.”

Leadership needed

Leeds have endured yet another disappointing season and failed to finish in the top six of the Championship.

It is clear that the Whites need a bit more bite in the midfield department and could do with more leaders on the pitch.

Barton may not exactly have been a ‘great’ player, but the former Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers star played with passion and always worked hard.

Leeds do need that kind of spirit and attitude on the football pitch if they are to complete for a playoff spot in the Championship table this season.
