Glasgow Rangers missed the chance to go second in the Scottish Premiership with the Ibrox side only able to draw at Pittodrie.

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to slam Jason Holt’s performance during the Gers’ 1-1 draw with Aberdeen that leaves Jimmy Nicholl’s men third in the Scottish Premiership heading into the final day of the season.

The Light Blues would have gone into the contest buoyed by their late winner over Kilmarnock at the weekend, and would have known that a victory over the Dons at Pittodrie would have lifted Rangers up to second ahead of their final day showdown with Hibernian at Easter Road.

Jason Holt of Rangers tracked by James Forrest of Celtic during the Betfred Cup Semi-Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on October 23, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

And despite making a very bright start against Aberdeen – with Alfredo Morelos failing to finish off a superb move from the Gers – Nicholl’s men fell behind when Morelos was controversially adjudged to have committed a foul on Kenny McLean inside the penalty area. McLean stepped up and dispatched the spot-kick to give the home side the lead.

Rangers’ winner on Saturday came from David Bates, and it was another unlikely goalscorer who got them back on level terms on Tuesday, with Ross McCrorie jumping highest to head home into the bottom corner shortly after the hour mark.

The goal also came moments after Holt had been taken off for Jason Cummings as the Light Blues pressed for an equaliser. And, judging by the reaction to the midfielder’s display on social media, it would hardly be a surprise if many Rangers fans were not surprised to see their equaliser come once Holt had been taken off.

The 25-year-old is unlikely to be suggested for a Player of the Season nomination while he remains at Ibrox, but he is the kind of player who several managers have turned to when they are expecting a scrappy contest in the middle of the park that Rangers must get the better of if they are going to go on and win.

Unfortunately however, many fans are unhappy with the attributes that he does possess, and feel that incoming boss Steven Gerrard needs to get rid of the former Hearts ace at the end of the season.
