Some Liverpool fans on Twitter have suggested that their club made a mistake by selling Mamadou Sakho.
The France centre-back left Liverpool to join Crystal Palace in a £26 million deal last summer.
The Reds aren't exactly flush with outstanding central defensive options to partner Virgil van Dijk, with Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip battling to play alongside the expensive Dutchman since January.
Sakho impressed in Palace's 2-1 win at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, and some Liverpool fans believe that the former Paris Saint-Germain stalwart, who joined the Anfield club in 2013, is still better than many of Jurgen Klopp's current options.
Here is their reaction to his performance:
Baffles me how Liverpool let Sakho leave.. him and VVD would be solid as a rock— Ryan Poulton (@ryanpoults69) May 5, 2018
A real shame what happened with Mamadou Sakho. Comfortably superior to both Lovren and Matip - he and Van Dijk would be a great pairing.— Henry Jackson (@HenryJackson87) May 5, 2018
At Liverpool his passing success rate was higher than Hendo's.— My Surname is Khan™ (@ejaz_k) May 5, 2018
Heck he even passed it forward more
Sakho/VVD is a wet dream.— Kev G (@therealKevG_) May 5, 2018
Sakho&VVD would likely have been brilliant. But I sort of think that Klopp too had a point when being strict with Sakho and his issues. His attitude and lifestyle is a problem imo. Hence no interest from big clubs etc. Do you think that Klopp made a mistake?— Tommi Koskinen (@THermanKoskinen) May 5, 2018
Sakho was awesome for us.— My Surname is Khan™ (@ejaz_k) May 5, 2018
Awkward, but awesome.
The haters on here are weird.
Spot on this pal. So many people forget how crucial he was in the EL run and how much he was missed in the final. Top player for us and always gave 100% on the pitch.— Danny (@danielhall__) May 5, 2018
Sakho, signed by Brendan Rodgers five years ago, is reported to have worried Klopp over his attitude [The Guardian] and that may well have played a role in the German's decision to offload him.
But the Liverpool fans have a point. On his day, Sakho was a superior defender than both Lovren and Matip for instance, though few can argue that the Reds - who have a Champions League final with Real Madrid later this month - haven't improved a lot since his exit.
