Jonny Evans is reportedly a Newcastle United target, but he will have to prove himself against the Magpies on Saturday.

Jonny Evans has numerous suitors this summer and, according to the Mirror, one of them is Newcastle United.

The West Bromwich Albion defender has been hot property for some time, but he has been unable to save his current club from relegation this season.

And so he looks set to move on for a bargain fee of £3million.

While this is an attractive deal, clubs will want assurances that he still possesses the class that made him one of the Premier League’s standout defenders prior to this season.

For Newcastle, he has the opportunity to prove himself this weekend.

West Brom travel to St James’ Park on Saturday and Evans will come face-to-face with a side he could have the opportunity to sign for this summer.

One of Newcastle’s main strengths in this campaign has been their defensive work and so Evans may find it difficult to convince Rafa Benitez that he deserves a shot on Tyneside.

If his aim is to do exactly that, Saturday’s game is an ideal audition. Likely coming head-to-head with Islam Slimani, another man who could join Newcastle permanently, Evans will want to show his class.

Were he to help West Brom to a clean sheet while Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune let the visitors through at the other end, that would certainly boost Evans’ case for a deal.

As a former Sunderland loanee, he may not even want to join Newcastle. But the opportunity will only be there if he can impress this week.
