Matthew Pennington was used at right-back as Leeds United got back to winning ways in the Championship.

Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to react to Matthew Pennington’s performance during their win over Barnsley on Saturday, and while there was a lot of frustration directed at the Everton loanee, there was plenty of criticism for Paul Heckingbottom’s decision to play him at right-back.
It has been an extremely difficult season for the 23-year-old. He enjoyed a bright debut, but has never been able to build upon that promise with injury and poor form preventing him from winning the majority of the fans over.

Despite struggling for much of the campaign, he did put in an encouraging performance during the Whites’ recent defeat to Aston Villa given that he was not fully fit and playing in a back four that included a winger at right-back and two academy starlets also making up the rest of the backline.
Pontus Jansson returned to the side for the game against Barnsley, but Pennington remained in the starting lineup with Heckingbottom moving him across to right-back.

Unfortunately however, the fans were not impressed with his display with Barnsley’s goal coming from the right flank in the 2-1 win for Leeds.
There were some positive signs, but a large section of the fans were not pleased with the Toffees-owned ace – while Heckingbottom left the supporters somewhat baffled by the decision to use him in that position rather than opt for a back three.
