Sunderland face a fight holding onto Sheffield Wednesday target George Honeyman after being relegated from the Championship into League One.

Sunderland’s relegation to League One was confirmed after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to fellow Championship strugglers Burton Albion. And it seems that the vultures are circling already.
Local rivals Newcastle United have already been linked with shock swoops for highly-rated Black Cats duo Josh Maja and Joel Asoro, according to The Mail. And The Sun (22nd April, page 63) is now reporting that Sheffield Wednesday are plotting a bid to sign exciting young midfielder George Honeyman.

The 23-year-old has been a rare bright spark in a dreadful season for Sunderland, who have now suffered successive relegations, but The Sun states that leaving the club would be an emotional decision for the local lad turned good.
It is understood, however, that Honeyman would love the chance to stay in the Championship, and jumping ship to Sheffield Wednesday would give him that opportunity.

It is not known how much it would take to prize Honeyman away from a debt-ridden Sunderland side, but considering that he is out of contract in one years’ time, Sheffield United will be hoping to snap him up on a cut price deal.
Sunderland manager Chris Coleman recently stated that he wants to keep Honeyman at the Stadium of Light, announcing plans to build his side around the young Englishman in The Chronicle, but it remains to be seen whether those plans are now still be possible.
