Could Glasgow Rangers consider bringing Glenn Hoddle to Ibrox during the summer?

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle is interviewed for British televison ahead of the UEFA Champions League football match between Benfica and Chelsea at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, on March...

He may not have been a manager for over a decade, but Sky Bet appear to believe that there is a decent chance that Glenn Hoddle could find himself in charge of Rangers at the start of next season with the former England boss currently being listed as the 5/1 third favourite for the job.

It will surprise few if Graeme Murty’s tenure does not continue past the end of this season. After doing an extremely impressive job in the wake of Pedro Caixinha’s departure, the honeymoon period is most definitely over with the Gers fighting to hold onto second in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty looks on from the touch line during the Scottish Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on April 15, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

They have won just one of their last five games in all competitions – losing to Celtic twice in that time – and the manner of their semi-final defeat to the Hoops quashed any optimism that the gap may be closing between the two sides.

It is going to be a crucial summer for the Light Blues therefore, with the next appointment they make absolutely vital. But could they decide to make a surprise approach for Hoddle?

Bookmaker Sky Bet now list the 60-year-old as the 5/1 third favourite to be in charge of the club on the opening day of next season, with only Alex Neil and Steve Clarke ahead of Hoddle in the market.

Former Tottenham Hotspur player, English Glen Hoddle walks during the closing ceremony at White Hart Lane in London, on May 14, 2017.

It remains to be seen whether there is anything in the odds, but it is particularly notable given that Hoddle has not been a first-team manager since leaving Wolves back in 2006, so would certainly be a risky appointment for the Gers despite being credited as one of the most-talented players England has ever had and proving to enjoy a decent amount of success during his managerial career.

But with Hoddle definitely a high-profile name and proving, particularly during his time as England boss, that he can build exciting teams that play a scintillating brand of football, perhaps there may be some Rangers fans who would not mind seeing the club attempt to bring him to Ibrox during the coming months.
