It has been a hugely disappointing season for Leeds United, and that is reflected in the reaction to the Player of the Year nominations announcement.
It has been a hugely disappointing season for the Whites. After an incredible start which saw Leeds initially talked about as potential title contenders and a side that would, at least, better their performance from last year when they finished seventh, the wheels have come off in dramatic fashion.
Two wins in 2018 have helped send the Whites hurtling down the table at an alarming rate and they now find themselves 15 points off the play-off places with just three games to go. And with the side losing to Aston Villa on Friday night, it was probably not the right time for the club to announce those up for the award.
In a commendable gesture from Leeds, young fan Toby Nye joins both Pablo Hernandez and Samuel Saiz on the shortlist. But it is the other two names on the list that have left supporters confused.
Roofe and Alioski will be able to look back on their numbers this term and feel relatively pleased. Roofe has scored 10 league goals, while Alioski has scored six goals and provided five assists in the Championship.
Nevertheless, they are arguably two of the players that have tended to go missing when Leeds are up against it and can go through long spells without making a significant contribution. And with Bailey Peacock-Farrell proving hugely impressive since coming into the first-team in March, a number of fans are stunned that the incredibly inconsistent attacking pair are in the running.
Here is the best of the reaction...
Or just given it to Pablo Hernandez? I mean they’ve even added roofe just to add the numbers up— ✍ (@LufcFan1919) April 16, 2018
Gjanni Alioski, Kemar Roofe hahahahahahahaha— Jamie Kilburn (@J_Kilburn) April 16, 2018
Alioski and Roofe. Can’t wait to read his thread later. Ffs.— Neil Gibbins (@gib1974) April 16, 2018
God knows how Alioski and Roofe have got anywhere near the shortlist but lets be honest, none of the players deserve it. Some have had the odd good couple of game here and there but overall they’ve been poor. I wouldn’t have bothered this year.— Danny Pigface (@Pigface80) April 16, 2018
@APOPEY Alioski?? Seriously??? This guy is one of the worst ever players I have seen in a Leeds shirt ever— Lee Stead (@LeeSteady1973) April 16, 2018
Nominating Roofe and Alioski is indicative of a poor, poor season. They've been average and that's being kind. Saiz has been brilliant in short spells and got himself banned for 6 games for being a petulant arse.— Andy McVeigh (@pantsdanny) April 16, 2018
Even Pablo is only effective at home generally.
What a club.
Roofe FFS!!!— oneplum (@PapaHirst) April 16, 2018
None of the players have performed over the whole season. Still think Pablo is overrated. Saiz was brilliant at the start of the season, non existant since Xmas. Alioski has had spells but nothing consistent. I like Roofe but can't say he's had a good season - but has anyone?— Andrew Bone (@andrewbone84) April 16, 2018
