There could be a new striker at Celtic this summer – and reports in Italy suggest that Brendan Rodgers is so keen to pull off the deal that he will make him the highest paid player in all of Scotland.

Calciomercato claimed on Wednesday that Hull City’s Uruguayan international centre-forward Abel Hernandez has emerged as a transfer target for the Scottish Premiership leaders this summer.

It is understood that Fiorentina and Sampdoria will offer the former Palermo striker a route back to Serie A and Hernandez is open to a return to Italy. But the report adds that Celtic have also put a three-year deal on the table for the 27-year-old, who will be a free agent when his contract at Hull City expires in the summer.

And Tuttomercatoweb has since added weight to those claims, stating that Hernandez is considering Celtic’s proposal after deciding that he will not stay with Championship strugglers Hull beyond this season.

Now, landing Hernandez on a free has the potential to be a superb deal for Celtic.

Though he was far from prolific in two spells in the Premier League with Hull, Hernandez is a prolific goalscorer at Championship level.

He netted 20 in 39 games to fire the Tigers to promotion in 2015/16 and has seven in seven starts this season despite spending much of the campaign on the sidelines with injury.
