Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pocehttino is seemingly set to face a tough decision over Toby Alderweireld this summer.

With Tottenham becoming a greater force in the domestic and European game with every season, Mauricio Pochettino will undoubtedly want to keep all of his best players and add even more quality to the ranks during the coming transfer windows.

Unfortunately for Pochettino however, it appears that there is a massive question mark over the future of one of his most important squad members, Toby Alderweireld.

The Telegraph reported in February that the Belgian’s current deal with Spurs expires in the summer of 2019. However, Tottenham can extend that deal by a further year, but that would then see a £25 million release clause activated at the end of next season.

The Telegraph added that Tottenham are still hoping to agree a fresh deal with the former Southampton loanee, but they have so far been unable to strike an agreement and a queue of interested sides are monitoring the situation, including Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

If Alderweireld decides against a new deal, there would certainly be an argument that it would be worth Spurs cashing in this summer as they are surely likely to get significantly more if they decide selling him at the end of the current campaign.

However, some Tottenham fans may feel that it would be completely the wrong decision to sell him this summer. They can still get a decent fee for him next year and replacing him could be a huge task – and perhaps, there is a chance, even if he decides against signing a new deal this season, that he may be tempted to commit his future to the club further down the line.

It is going to be a hugely difficult decision for Pochettino and Daniel Levy, but perhaps taking a gamble and keeping him beyond this season may actually be the better option if Spurs hope to continue to progress.
