Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is in and out of the Reds' side, but he remains a regular starter for Holland.
Wijnaldum started for the Netherlands last night in a surprise role, he was picked by manager Ronald Koeman in central midfield.
The Liverpool star was picked as the most central of three players, alongside Brighton's Davy Propper and Ajax's Donny van de Beek.
Wijnaldum helped the Dutch cruise to an impressive 3-0 win over the Euro 2016 champions, who withdrew Cristiano Ronaldo with the side three down.
4 - The Netherlands midfield (Davy Pröpper, Georginio Wijnaldum, Donny van de Beek) lost possession only four times (98 touches), fewer than 10 of the other outfield players in Portugal v Netherlands managed individually. Control.— OptaJohan (@OptaJohan) March 26, 2018
Wijnaldum's Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk netted the third goal, with ex-Red Ryan Babel following up Memphis Depay's opener.
The easy win made the experiment with Wijnaldum in central midfield a success, although it is too early to tell if it is an experiment Ronald Koeman will look to repeat.
He was substituted off after 67 minutes, having completed 92 per cent of his passes.
Wijnaldum had one effort on goal which was off target, and made two interceptions.
His versatility has been a big asset for Liverpool since his move from Newcastle United, and this was further evidence of why Jurgen Klopp is a big fan.
Here is a look at how fans reacted on twitter to his performance. It was not all positive, but there was enough to demonstrate reason for encouragment...

Very interesting to see Pröpper's further development into more of a holding role. And a logical consequence of him being successful there is that Wijnaldum is now playing better in a more suitable role for him. #PORxNED— Thomas Schaling (@ThomasSchaling) March 26, 2018

Wijnaldum really is class at resisting the press! Has the potential to be so much more— Larry Houdini (@lawbeau94) March 26, 2018
De Ligt and van Dijk were majestuous tonight. The future of the Dutch team. Wijnaldum very good, Ake & Tete too. An actual team being built. Depay with some good flashes too. Good to see— Bloemy (@ybthebest) March 26, 2018
