Wolverhampton Wanderers are receiving praise from all directions right now and rightly so.

Despite being retired as a professional footballer, legendary striker Kevin Phillips’ name continues to be associated with Wolverhampton Wanderers but, this time, it is in a much more positive light for Wolves fans.

Phillips is currently a coach at Wolves’ Championship rivals Derby County and, as reported by the Express & Star, he believes that the league leaders could make quite the impression on the top flight if they are able to secure promotion.

“Looking at the Premier League as it is now, with the teams that are in there, I would fancy Wolves to finish just below halfway,” he said. “I see them playing better football, they’ve got more clinical in the top third than four, five, six or seven teams in the Premier League.

“I know it’s a different ball game with the pressure and so on when you get up there but they’ve got top quality players, players that have played in the Champions League.”

This may not mean a thing for Wolves supporters given their history with Phillips and, given his experience in the game at the highest level, it is certainly worth noting. After all, if someone like Phillips, who analyses the Championship on a week to week basis, is saying this kind of stuff then perhaps more should sit up and take notice.

It is no secret that this Wolves team is full of even more quality than we are used to seeing prior to promotion but, alongside that, the quality of the Premier League is much lower than usual. Over half of the teams are still in the running for relegation, with last year’s promoted clubs Brighton, Newcastle United and Huddersfield finding themselves in 12th, 13th and 15th respectively.

That is not something we often see but, in the present day, it seems to be much easier to embed into the top flight, which is probably because of just how much the top teams in the division have been able to strengthen by comparison.

Wolves are not exactly world beaters just yet, but they are more than capable of making some serious noise.
