McClaren left Ipswich Town’s league rivals Derby County a year ago.

Ipswich Town hope to talk Steve McClaren into becoming their new manager, after making the former Derby County boss their number one choice to replace Mick McCarthy, according to the Sun on Sunday (March 25th, page 63).
The report claims Ipswich will split with McCarthy at the end of his contract this summer, and are looking for ‘an experienced successor’ and ‘steady pair of hands’.

McClaren – who has been out of work since leaving his role as coaching consultant at Maccabi Tel Aviv last December – is said to be keen on a return to football, and the chance to manage at Championship level would appeal, according to the Sun on Sunday.
The 56-year-old former England manager last worked at that level a year ago, when he was sacked by Derby months into his second spell in charge at Pride Park.

He previously led the Rams to the 2014 play-off final, and won trophies at Middlesbrough and FC Twente, but endured difficult spells at Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
McCarthy, meanwhile, has been linked with moves to several clubs, including West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday, having grown increasingly unpopular among the Ipswich fanbase.
