Aston Villa are in with a good shout of promotion to the Premier League and John Terry has certainly made a huge impact at Villa Park.
It is difficult to put into words just how influential John Terry has been on and off the pitch since moving to Aston Villa in the summer.
Some had predicted that the former England captain was finished when he was released by Chelsea after two decades of loyal service at the end of his fifth Premier League title winning campaign. And Villa were certainly taking a risk signing a 36-year-old on a £60,000 a week deal, according to the Sun, particularly with Financial Fair Play breathing down their neck.
But Terry has delivered an emphatic response to his doubters in a season when he has emerged reborn and proven, once and for all, that age is but a number. The now 37-year-old has started 28 Championship games and it is no coincidence that a Villa side who finished in the bottom half last season are now in the midst of a play-off battle.
That does not mean, however, that Aston Villa fans would vote for Terry as the club’s Player of the Season. Instead, his underrated centre-back partner James Chester would seemingly get the nod from plenty of the Villa Park faithful.
Chester lost the captaincy to Terry last summer but, to his credit, the Welsh international has taken that on the chin and emerged as arguably the top performing defender in the second tier this season.
Terry is eternally brilliant, but is he even the best centre-back at Villa Park?
#AVFC top 5 players of the season is a tough call but I'd go -— WF (@WFAPEX) March 21, 2018
The top 2 based pip Terry as played more minutes. Snoddy had a shakeup start. Grealish hasn't played enough.
James Chester but only just. Sam Johnstone has been excellent too. Very few mistakes from both.— Si (@Si_AVFC) March 20, 2018
