Could Celtic go back in Filip Benkovic amid links with Vujadin Savic?

Celtic's head coach Brendan Rodgers talks during a press conference in Brussels on September 26, 2017 on the eve of the Champions League group B) football match against RSC Anderlecht.

Celtic are reportedly doing some scouting in Southeast Europe, so perhaps Filip Benkovic could come onto their radar again.

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Celtic are scouting in Southeast Europe amid links with Red Star Belgrade defender Vujadin Savic - who the report suggests is not actually a player on the Hoops' radar.

While Brendan Rodgers' men look set to maintain their domestic dominance this season and have a great chance to clinch another Treble, it could certainly be argued that the Bhoys are not quite the same force that they were last year.

One of the major problems that Celtic have had has come at the back this season, with the likes of Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic struggling to win over their critics and Erik Sviatchenko not really getting a chance before leaving on loan in January.

It may not be a surprise if Savic ultimately becomes a player that they are keen on, but perhaps it would also not be a shock if a former target currently plying his trade in that region of Europe comes back onto their radar.

In January 2017, The Scottish Sun reported that Celtic were keen on Dinamo Zagreb defender Filip Benkovic, but would be unable to complete a move for the 20-year-old with his club demanding £17 million for him.

The fact that The Scottish Sun suggested in October last year that Celtic had stepped up their interest in the defender perhaps hinted at the time that the Scottish Premiership side may have felt that they may not need to meet his previous asking price to get a deal done.

So perhaps with Celtic reportedly scouting the region once again at the moment, it would not be out of the question for the Hoops to consider moving for Benkovic in the summer if Rodgers is still keen to bolster his defensive options.

He will certainly not come cheap, but if Celtic can get Zagreb to agree to a much lower fee than the previously-quoted price, it would arguably be a brilliant piece of business from the Hoops with Benkovic boasting considerable potential in a position where the Hoops have looked vulnerable at times this season.
