Harkins impressed despite being on the losing side against Celtic.

Gary Harkins has joked that he is off to join Celtic next season, after a conversation with the Bhoys’ manager on Saturday.

Harkins impressed in Morton’s 3-0 defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Cup fifth round, and the 33-year-old was spotted talking to Rodgers as he left the field afterwards.

“I spoke to Brendan, aye. I’m here next season, I think!” Said Harkins – who was on the books of Celtic as a youngster – via the Scottish Sun. “I’ll be cleaning his boots for him!

“No, seriously, he was lovely. You can see with the way he speaks to the press and everything that he carries himself really well and it’s a good pat on the back for me, so I’m happy.”

Whether Celtic sign him or not, Harkins remains on course to return to Parkhead next season with Morton third in the Championship.

The Greenock based side are the 12th of Harkins’ career, and promotion with them would be extra special for the local midfielder.

Celtic took 62 minutes to break down Jim Duffy’s men courtesy of Moussa Dembele, who added a second from the penalty spot before Odsonne Edouard sealed the Bhoys’ progression to the semi-finals, where rivals Rangers await.
