The reported Sheffield Wednesday and West Bromwich Albion target also discussed Ipswich Town’s interest in Owls striker Jordan Rhodes.

Mick McCarthy, manager of Ipswich looks on prior to the Carabao Cup Second Round match between Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town at Selhurst Park on August 22, 2017 in London, England.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has been asked about reports linking him with moves to clubs including Sheffield Wednesday and West Bromwich Albion.

The Daily Mail has listed Wednesday, West Brom and Reading as potential destinations for McCarthy, whose Ipswich contract expires at the end of the season.

However, speaking at a press conference broadcast via the East Anglian Daily Times’ Facebook page on Monday, the Yorkshireman laughed off the speculation.

“Is that where we were going? I didn’t realise that,” he quipped. “I’ve spoken to them all! [No,] none!”

McCarthy takes his Ipswich side to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, where they could face a rumoured January transfer target in Jordan Rhodes.

Asked if Rhodes is a player the Tractor Boys asked about, the 59-year-old replied: “Well if they [Wednesday] wanted him off the wage bill we weren’t going to pay it. So, not really, no.

“We asked about loads of people but I wouldn’t tell you who we did and who we didn’t that’s for certain.”

McCarthy’s appointment at either club is unlikely to be welcomed with open arms, given his previous run-ins with Wednesday and ties to West Brom’s bitter rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The former Republic of Ireland defender and manager already has plenty of detractors at Ipswich, despite having led them to three top-half finishes in his five seasons in charge – all while operating a tight budget.
