Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have one Chelsea loanee in Charly Musonda but Mason Mount’s Eredivisie form means they must track him too.
Eredivisie outfit Vitesse Arnhem have profited immensely from their links with Premier League giants Chelsea over the last couple of years.
But it would probably be no exaggeration to suggest that Mason Mount is the best Stamford Bridge starlet to ever grace Vitesse’s first team. The 19-year-old midfielder has been nothing short of a revelation in recent months, netting seven goals in just 13 starts for Henk Fraser’s side.
And Mount, a fleet-footed youngster with remarkable technical ability, saved perhaps his best performance of the season for the recent 2-2 draw with VVV Venlo, firing home a pin-point free-kick to earn a point – and a place in the Eredivisie team of the week.
Though, as Tammy Abraham and co will tell you, fantastic form out on loan doesn’t guarantee a place in Chelsea’s first-team.
So it would be no surprise if Mount, who has never played for the Blues, is loaned out again next season – and Scottish champions Celtic must be right at the front of the queue.
Celtic have become something of a finishing school for some of the Premier League’s most talented youngsters and Charly Musonda is currently spending the next 18 months honing his trade at Parkhead.
The Bhoys, however, could still do with a creative number ten and Mount, who played alongside Musonda at youth level, certainly fits the bill. Blessed with goals, skill and an eye for pass, the 2017 U19 European Championship winner is exactly the kind of player who would thrive under Brendan Rodgers.
Mason Mount (19) is flying high under the radar in Arnhem to the surprise of no Chelsea youth fan. Goals from set pieces hit headlines but it’s his ability to link play in his CM role that is truly eye catching.
