Graeme Murty’s Rangers could be looking to strengthen in O’Neill’s position if Sean Goss fails to return to Ibrox.
Rangers are interested in bringing Brandon O’Neill to Ibrox next season, according to the Canberra Times.
O’Neill is described in the report as being Sydney FC’s first-choice central midfielder – a position in which Rangers could be looking to strengthen after Ian Holloway’s comments about Ibrox loan star Sean Goss this week.
The Scottish Sun reports that a cut-price deal could be possible for Graeme Murty’s team, with O’Neill’s contract set to expire at the end of December.
However, there is no mention of the terms of his deal in the Canberra Times report, while Transfermarkt states that it expires in June 2019 – after the next A-League season.
Who is O’Neill?
O’Neill is a 5ft 10ins tough-tackling defensive midfielder with six goals and two assists in his 77 Sydney appearances since signing from Perth Glory in 2015 – in which time he has won the A-League Premiership and Championship, as well as the FFA Cup.
Though born and raised in Perth, Australia, the 23-year-old has Irish parents – as well as an Irish passport – and is eligible to play for both nations, having never appeared for Australia above Under-23 level.
And as the Canberra Times points out, however, this could put O’Neill at odds with some sections of Rangers’ pro-union fanbase.
