Former Middlesbrough managers Garry Monk and Gordon Strachan are in the running to become Birmingham City’s next manager, according to the Sun [February 28th, printed edition].

The report claims Blues owner Paul Suen is flying in for ‘crisis talks’ with current boss Steve Cotterill, whose side have lost four straight Championship fixtures and sit two points adrift of safety in 22nd position.

It adds that assistant coaches Lee Carsley and Paul Williams could step in on a temporary basis, with Monk and Strachan, who left Middlesbrough and Scotland respectively at the end of 2017, potential alternatives.

Three’s the magic number…

Should Birmingham hire a permanent replacement, it would be the second successive campaign in which they have gone through three full-time managers.

Gary Rowett, Gianfranco Zola and Harry Redknapp all had spells at St Andrew’s last season, with Cotterill succeeding the latter last September.

Redknapp’s appointment catalysed Blues’ survival last term, and the club’s Hong Kong owners will be hoping for a similar impact this time around.
