Jordan Pickford has claimed to the Liverpool Echo that Everton were always going to start this season slowly, as so much change happened over the summer.

Everton invested heavily in their squad before the season started, and there was great excitement ahead about the future at Goodison Park.

However, this campaign can only be labelled as a disappointment now, with Everton struggling to live up to expectations.

The Toffees’ poor start ultimately cost Ronald Koeman his job, and things have not got much better since Sam Allardyce took charge.

Everton are currently in ninth place in the Premier League table, with frustrations rising around the Merseyside club.

But Pickford believes that Everton were always set for a difficult season this time around.

The goalkeeper said: “It was always going to be a slow start when you bring new signings in because you need time to gel and get that understanding going.

“I feel that, as a group of lads, we have come a long way.

Pickford is one of the few Everton players who has actually impressed in his first season at Goodison Park.

The stopper, who was signed from Sunderland for £30 million, has enhanced his reputation and there is now talk of him being England’s number one at the World Cup.

Everton are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Burnley at Turf Moor.
