Mason Holgate was involved in Everton’s under-23’s side’s clash with Barnsley on Monday.

Everton fans have been reacting to Mason Holgate’s inclusion in the under-23 squad for the Toffees’ Premier League cup clash with Barnsley at Oakwell on Monday, and it is safe to say that the supporters are not happy to see the youngster involved.
Holgate has endured a mixed season with Everton so far. He has made 13 appearances in the Premier League but has not featured in any of their last three games and only made the bench on one occasion – the 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal at the start of the month.

Having not been involved in the matchday squad for the weekend win over Crystal Palace, the 21-year-old returned to action this week as part of the under-23 side that faced the Tykes.
It was a win for the Merseyside outfit against the club that Holgate left to move to Goodison Park in 2015 – but that did little to lift the gloom of some of the supporters who were quite angry to see the prospect involved in the game rather than featuring for the first-team.

Everton’s defenders have not covered themselves in glory this season. But while much more is expected of the experienced members of the squad, such as Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams, Holgate’s form has encouraged a number of the fans who expect the youngster to get better as he gets older.
His performances have been understandable given the struggles that some of his teammates have endured throughout the campaign, and that has left many bemused as to why he is being used by the under-23s rather than playing in the first-team.
Here is the best of the reaction…
