The new Dundee arrival explained that he had the option to sign for Celtic last season, but declined and chose to remain at QPR.

Earlier this week free agent Steven Caulker, 26, signed an 18-month deal with Scottish Premiership club Dundee, after his QPR contract was terminated by mutual consent last month.

With one England cap to his name, Caulker has played for some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs in Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, and revealed yesterday that in 2017 he had the choice to join the Scottish Champions Celtic and work under Brendan Rodgers again, as reported by Sky Sports.

At the time, Caulker was a QPR player, and still on his road to recovery from various issues surrounding his alcohol and gambling addictions.

With his health in mind, Caulker opted against the move to Parkhead as he believed remaining in London was the best thing for his recovery.

According to Sky Sports, the 26-year-old said: “It came close. I decided in the end to stay in London. I was early on in my recovery and I felt my support network was best in London.

“I opted out of Scotland at that moment but I’m pleased to be up here now and it’s good to see Brendan doing really well there again.”

Should Caulker perform well for Dundee, just like any other player in Scotland who pays outside of the Old Firm teams, he will be right on the radar of the Scottish champions and their cross city rivals Rangers.

Both teams strengthened at centre-half last month, however, Celtic’s last outing against Kilmarnock proves that despite the signing of Jack Hendry and Marvin Compper, their defensive woes remain.

There is no doubt that the Celtic scouting team will be watching Neil McCann’s new arrival closely, in the hope that they too can capitalise on the defender’s untapped potential.
