Everton's Ademola Lookman (L) celebrates after scoring during the UEFA Europa League group stage football match between Apollon Limassol and Everton at the GSP stadium in the Cypriot...
It was not a good day for Everton yesterday. They were completely outplayed by Arsenal in a 5-1 thrashing at the Emirates Stadium. The result clearly irked Sam Allardyce, who felt his players simply did not do as they were asked in the fixture - with poor performances all around.
One Everton player however did have a game to remember yesterday, just not in London. In fact, not in the UK. Instead, this was in Germany, in Monchengladbach to be precise.
Ademola Lookman confounded the misery on Merseyside by weaving his way through Gladbach defenders and scoring a late winner for RB Leipzig on his debut. It was a terrific goal and the Everton fans who felt he should have stuck around were in full voice after his stunning start to life in Germany:
Lookman deserves to be given more game time over Bolasie— Pog (@Poggymac87) February 4, 2018
If Lookman shines in Germany, it undermines Allardyce and he knows it. If he'd played well for Derby, then "it's only The Championship". If he succeeds in The Bundesliga, it throws Allardyce's judgement into question. More than one reason Sam didn't like the idea of Leipzig...— Andy H (@Andy_H_EFC) February 3, 2018
Since he first signed, Lookman has played with purpose and attacking intent. Rarely gives the ball away.— Ell Bretland (@EllBretland) February 3, 2018
The only reason he is behind Bolasie in pecking order is because of misguided trust from Allardyce and age.
Genuinely think he plays with more maturity. #EFC
Baffling decision to let Lookman go out on loan but Everton no longer surprise their supporters, only disappoint #EFC— Ben Grounds (@Ben_Islington) February 3, 2018
It's a huge worry that the key football people at the club think an injury ravaged Bolasie is a better player than Ademola Lookman. Perhaps soon they won't be employed at the club. #EFC— John Merro (@johnmerro1) February 3, 2018
Could be! The whole Lookman thing suggests players aren’t happy - it looks very much like that lad was just desperate to get away from the man.— Rachael Cotgrave (@bluegirl1878) February 3, 2018
The player himself was also obviously happy with his start at his new club, posting this tweet after the game:
Lookman is a fantastic young talent but since arriving at Everton from Charlton Athletic the club have not given him the extended run in the first-team he clearly deserves.
This loan spell is supposed to be the making of him and it has certainly got off to a perfect start. Everton will just hope he is back next season and putting in similar match-winning performances after a bad day to be an Evertonian.
