Jack Rodwell was expected to go on trial with Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, with his Sunderland future all but over.

Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell will not be going on trial with Dutch Eredivisie outfit Vitesse Arnhem after all, the club have confirmed on Thursday morning – and supporters have vented their anger at the decision on Twitter.

Rodwell, 26, has been ousted by Sunderland as the club have informed the former Manchester City and Everton ace that he has no future at the Stadium of Light.

However, Rodwell has refused a mutual termination of his contract, stating that he would rather remain on the sidelines and continue to pocket £70,000 a week with Sunderland refusing to pay a huge compensation fee.

Vitesse stated on their official Twitter account that a trial for Rodwell will not take place, despite previously confirming it would. They tweeted: “Due to organizational reasons, Jack Rodwell’s trial with #Vitesse does not take place.”

The news will come as a bitter blow to Sunderland, as they are desperate to offload the three-time England international in order to free up a huge chunk of space on the wage bill for potential signings and financial stability.

Sunderland fans have reacted to the news, with one fan describing Rodwell as a “coward”.
