Report: Bruno Alves to remain at Rangers as Benevento make decision

The Scottish Sun claim Bruno Alves is expected to remain at Rangers after Serie A side Benevento - who were reportedly interested in the veteran defender - have signed former Premier League ace Bacary Sagna instead.

Alves, 36, was linked with a move to the Serie A's bottom club Benevento as he looks to get his chances of achieving a place in Portugal's 2018 World Cup squad back on track.

However, the top-tier Italian side have reportedly expressed concerns over the commanding centre-back's injury record, with the Portuguese defender currently sidelined due to a calf injury.

Alves missed the Gers' trip to Florida during the winter break because of the injury and was nowhere to be seen as the Gers returned to competitive action with aplomb on Wednesday night, beating Aberdeen 2-0 at Ibrox.

Rangers have brought in Russell Martin on loan from Championship club Norwich City on loan until the end of the season while Danny Wilson, David Bates and Fabio Cardoso are vying for a place at the heart of the Gers defence.

However, Alves is expected to remain in Glasgow until the end of the season at least, with a year and a half remaining on his current Rangers contract after he signed a two-year deal under the guidance of Pedro Caixinha.

In all competitions, the former Porto defender has made 17 appearances and helped the Light Blues keep six clean sheets as well as captaining the side on three occasions.
