Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is refusing to strengthen a relegation rival this January.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to the Hammers but The Chronicle understands that Benitez does not want to sell to a potential relegation rival.
David Moyes’ team are currently 11th in the Premier League table, but only three points above 15th-place Newcastle and four points clear of the bottom three.

Shelvey has started Newcastle’s last four matches but his reaction to being substituted in the 1-1 draw with Swansea City led to fresh reports he could be sold.
The 25-year-old snubbed a handshake with Benitez as he left the pitch, but The Chroncile reports that it has not damaged the relationship between the pair.

The Chronicle adds that Newcastle were interested in West Ham strikers Diafra Sakho and Javier Hernandez as answers to his side’s goalscoring problems.
Both forwards have been tippied to leave the London Stadium by The Sun, but a potential swap deal is off the table as Benitez refuses to deal with bottom-half clubs.
However, there does seem to be some tension between Shelvey and Benitez, so the former Liverpool player could be offload in the summer if the Spaniard remains in charge.
