Dave Edwards thinks that Wolverhampton Wanderers have used their links with super-agent Jorge Mendes in the "right way" to achieve success in the Championship this season.

Reading midfielder Edwards, who spent nine years at Wolves before leaving last summer for the Madejski Stadium, thinks that the players and staff Mendes has brought to the club is building something special.

"The Fosun Group, who own Wolves, have got this link to Jorge Mendes and have used it in the right the way," the Wales international said on Channel 5's Championship programme.

"The manager [Nuno Espirito Santo] probably wouldn't be a Championship manager if it wasn't for Jorge Mendes so Wolves have got to be grateful for that.

"Then bringing in players like [Helder] Costa, [Ivan] Cavaleiro last year building on that. You've got [Ruben] Neves, who's probably the best midfielder the Championship has ever seen, Diogo Jota, Willy Boly, even [Leo] Bonatini came in.

"I'm just worried for the Premier League when they do get promoted who they're going to bring in next because it could be Cristiano Ronaldo through the door."

Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo is probably Mendes' most famous client and his fellow Portuguese oversaw his then world record £80m transfer to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu from Manchester United in the summer of 2009.

Fox Sports reports that the forward, who turns 33 next month, has fallen out with Real president Florentino Perez and is being linked with an exit from the Spanish capital.

Rumours suggesting Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane could move to Madrid have only fuelled speculation that Ronaldo is on his way out, with a return to United or a switch to Paris Saint-Germain seemingly the most likely.

However, should they be playing in England's top flight next season and with Mendes' close links, could Wolves perhaps persuade the veteran Portugal international to come to Molineux?
