Arsenal fans on Twitter aren't happy with Mohamed Elneny it seems.
The Egypt international started Saturday's 4-1 win over Crystal Palace at the Emirates as a determined Arsenal side put the opposition to the sword with a ruthless first-half display to show that life will go on after Alexis Sanchez, who is close to joining Manchester United.
It was a good day for the Gunners who picked up a much-needed victory, but the three points and emphatic performance wasn't enough to save some players from criticism.
And Elneny was among those to come in for criticism on Twitter afterwards.
The 25-year-old, who joined Arsenal for £7.4 million two years ago, started in midfield alongside Granit Xhaka but a lot of fans of the North London club weren't hugely impressed by him, though others felt he gave a decent account of himself.
Xhaka AND Elneny in midfield. Sideways, sideways, sideways, gives ball away, runs around, sideways sideways... Excited— Darren (@DarrenArsenal1) January 20, 2018
Elneny is the worst, don’t think he ever makes a forward pass— Sammy (@Sjfafc_92) January 20, 2018
Rather throw in Reiss on the right, Ozil 10 and jack deep. Or even give Maitland-Niles a chance to play in his preferred midfield position. Elneny is garbage!!!— Anand AFC Agarwal (@AnandAFCAgarwal) January 20, 2018
I could have played Elneny's role today. Passing sideways and receiving clearances on the half way line ain't hard when your 4-0 after 20 mins. Let's not sing & dance. #afc— Josh Lloyd (@joshualloyd_) January 20, 2018
Why aren’t we selling welbeck n elneny— Rodo (@Tozone88) January 21, 2018
People thinking Elneny is the answer at DM after playing against a woeful Palace at home pic.twitter.com/T5IVFKfAUn— Dazza, The Creator (@dazza_AFC) January 20, 2018
Really impressed by Elneny today - he did his job superbly, and showed a sense of urgency he normally lacks. Monreal had brilliant end product, and Ozil is just of course head and shoulders above the rest. #AFC— Renato (@th14Renato) January 20, 2018
I’ve had enough of xhaka and elneny man both need to go in the summer and be replaced by world class holding mids... #AFC— Ryan McKenna (@Mckezzle) January 20, 2018
We need to sell Elneny ASAP— Matt (@MattWShore) January 20, 2018
Whether it was a good performance or not does not matter. Fact is, Arsenal probably need better than Elneny and there is two year's worth of evidence to support it.
In saying that, the same could be said about Xhaka who, despite his £35 million price tag, does not look like he's getting a lot better under Arsene Wenger.
