Sunderland are trying to release Jack Rodwell and Celtic have been linked with a shock move to sign the former England international.

Yet this is just another low in a career of almost incessant troughs for Jack Rodwell. The peaks have been left very much in 2012 and, in the five-and-a-half years since he swapped Everton for Manchester City in that sliding doors moment, almost everything seems to have gone wrong.

Sunderland paid £10 million for Rodwell back in the summer of 2014, but it took him another three years to win a Premier League game in which he had started. And, with injuries restricting him to just two Championship appearances all season, the Black Cats are desperate to get him off the wage bill.
Sunderland, quite literally, cannot afford to carry a £70,000-a-week white elephant on their backs.
But while those on Wearside are unsurprisingly not too disappointed about Rodwell’s potential exit this month, fans of Celtic have reacted strongly to reports that he could be on his way to Parkhead in a real shock switch.

The Sunderland Echo reports that Celtic have been monitoring Rodwell’s situation and could make a move for the former England international, just a few months after Brendan Rodgers tried to sign him on loan.
Rodwell is, or was, a talented prospect and a player who, at just 26, still has time on his side.
But it seems this signing would be far from popular in the green half of Glasgow.
