Celtic shouldn’t sell Jozo Simunovic and keep Dedryck Boyata.

Speculation has mounted that Lazio want Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic.

Corriere Dello Sport have reported that the Serie A side want the Hoops centre-back as a potential replacement for Stefan de Vrij, if he leaves the Italian capital.

But Celtic fans should be livid if Simunovic leaves Glasgow and Dedryck Boyata winds up staying.

Neither centre-back has covered himself in much glory over the past month or so, but Simunovic is head and shoulders above his Belgian team-mate and, at 23, the Croat has a lot more to offer in the long term than the 27-year-old.

Brendan Rodgers has already signed Marvin Compper but pairing him with Boyata does not seem like a recipe for guaranteed success, but Celtic would have a very formidable centre-back partnership if Rodgers paired him with Simunovic instead.

Jozo Simunovic of Celtic celebrates after he scores during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Dundee and Celtic at Dens Park Stadium on March 19, 2017 in Dundee, Scotland.

The former Manchester City man has been a bit of a disaster in the weeks leading up to the Bhoys’ winter break and surely Rodgers can’t justify keeping him or Erik Sviatchenko and letting Simunovic go.

Rodgers could yet lose Moussa Dembele, but losing two big factors in their brilliant season last term jeopardises the likelyhood of winning the double treble and the Northern Irish boss must keep that in mind.
