Liverpool currently sit in fourth position in the Premier League table, 18 points adrift of Manchester City.
Martin Keown shared his belief that the Reds will be Man City’s biggest challengers in the race for the Premier League title this season, when writing his Tackle Keown column for the Daily Mail.
Pep Guardiola’s rampant City side currently sit 15 points clear of second placed Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table, and it would take a quite catastrophic collapse for them to miss out on winning the title this season.
Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side have been excellent in their own right, however, especially in the final third, and following their £75 million signing of Virgil van Dijk, they should be in a great position to mount a sustained challenge for major honours on all fronts.
A title challenge might be just outside the realms of possibility, however, with 18 points currently separating themselves and the Citizens.
Keown, though, claimed that Liverpool could pose the biggest challenge to Pep Guardiola’s side this term, when writing a column for the Daily Mail:
“Manchester City’s next big test in the Premier League is at Anfield. Liverpool could pose the biggest challenge to City for the rest of the season. This time last year Liverpool were second in the league just five points behind Chelsea but you felt they were overachieving. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola were used to a rest period in Germany and by the end of Christmas, the former looked exhausted. His team hit a wall but this time he has paced himself better. Liverpool look like they are raring to go for the second half of the season.”
Next up for the Reds is their FA Cup tie with Everton tomorrow night, before they welcome City to Anfield, and if Klopp’s men manage to win, it might just breath life back into their title challenge.
