Report: Newcastle enquire about Watford’s Troy Deeney

Newcastle United have reportedly made an enquiry regarding Watford striker Troy Deeney.

According to a report from ESPN, Newcastle have made Troy Deeney their number one striker target for the January transfer window, and have reached out to Watford with an enquiry regarding the 29-year-old’s availability.

The Magpies may be 13th in the Premier League, but they find themselves just two points clear of the bottom three in the top flight – and finding the back of the net has been a key reason for their current precarious position.

Rafa Benitez’s men have scored just 20 times in 22 league games, and the Spaniard has identified Deeney as the man he wants to come in to St James’ Park to give the team more quality going forward.

ESPN reports that he is their priority striker target, and the Magpies have already made an enquiry for the Hornets captain, who has been a peripheral figure at Vicarage Road this season.

Deeney has made 13 top flight appearances this term, but he has started just seven times and has scored just two goals, and ESPN hints that Marco Silva may be tempted to consider cashing in on Deeney this month if he has no plans to use him more often.

Though Deeney’s record this season does not jump out as being particularly impressive, he has reached double figures for league goals during Watford’s previous two campaigns in the Premier League, so Benitez would certainly be forgiven for thinking that he could potentially provide the firepower that may ensure that the Magpies score the goals to keep themselves in the division this term.
