Paul Lambert is being lined up for the vacant manager’s job at Sheffield Wednesday, HITC Sport understands

Struggling Wednesday are looking to bring in a new manager as soon as possible to succeed Carlos Carvalhal at Hillsborough.

Carvalhal was sacked by Wednesday on Christmas Eve, just 24 hours after a home defeat to Middlesbrough with Lee Bullen placed in caretaker charge of the side.

Bullen got off to a winning start with victory over Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, but Wednesday have lost their last two games, including a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to struggling Burton Albion.

A number of names have been linked with the vacancy at Hillsborough, but former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Lambert is in pole position to take over from Carvalhal.

Lambert has been out of work since being sacked by Wolves at the end of last season and the former Celtic and Scotland midfielder has been keen to get back into management.

Wednesday’s hierarchy want to bring in an experienced manager to help get their season back on track and ensure they avoid being dragged into a relegation battle during the second half of the campaign.

Lamber would fit the bill as the type of manager Wednesday are looking for, as he is available immediately and he has knowledge of working in the Championship before with Norwich City, Blackburn Rovers and Wolves.
