Southampton rounded off 2017 with a spirited draw away at Manchester United.
Southampton fans have been lauding Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after his performance in their goalless draw with Manchester United on Saturday, and they have urged Mauricio Pellegrino not to leave the Dane out of the side again.
They looked considerably better however than they did against Spurs, and had their opportunities to actually win the game, with Shane Long coming closest for the visitors who go into 2018 13th in the top flight ahead of a crucial clash with Crystal Palace at the start of the New Year.
While it has not been the best end to the year for Southampton, they do take some positives with them into the second-half of the campaign - and one of those positives is most definitely the form of Hojbjerg.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder has impressed since getting into the side and stepped up once again against United, and that has resulted in the 22-year-old receiving a huge amount of praise from the fans after the game on Twitter.
The midfielder has arguably been one of the Saints' best performers, and yet, he has struggled to hold down a place in the team - with his appearance at the weekend only his eighth in the league this season - and that has perplexed the fans, who have urged Pellegrino to make him one of the first names on the teamsheet every week.
Here is the best of the reaction...
Hojbjerg has really started to show some character these past few weeks. Can see him stepping up to the plate this second half of the season #saintsfc— Dan Hiscock (@Hiscock91) December 31, 2017
Hojbjerg is a quality player,he must be awful in training though as 2 managers overlooked him for a season and a half #SaintsFC— Jamie pang (@jamiepang) December 30, 2017
Agree - Hojbjerg has been a different class since getting back into the team. Can’t think there are many better form midfielders in the Prem at the moment. Needs to be the first name on the team sheet.... every week. No rotation needed.— Kev (@footy_mad) December 30, 2017
#saintsfc Another man of the match performance from Hojbjerg. He needs to be selected consistently as does that central defence combination.— Gman (@gmembery) December 30, 2017
Hojbjerg must start every game! Key not to make unnecessary changes for next game..— Andy Goodall (@OhecAndy) December 30, 2017
Pierre Hojbjerg topped almost EVERY stat today. Sensational performance in midfield. #SaintsFC— Dan (@danbsfc) December 30, 2017
