Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was highly critical of the Saints’ transfer policy, when speaking to Sky Sports, suggesting that his former club are now in a ‘mess’.

Southampton have become renowned for being a selling club over the past decade or so, but have escaped criticism by generally making improvements year by year.

There has been a mass exodus on the south coast in recent years, with the likes of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Sadio Mane and now Virgil van Dijk leaving for pastures new, and for the first time in a while, it seems to have really affected the Saints as a team.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men currently sit in 14th position in the Premier League table, just two points clear of the drop zone, and relegation to the Championship now seems like a very real possibility for them.

Redknapp, who made 17 appearances for Southampton during a six-month spell on the south coast, was highly critical of his former club’s transfer strategy, when speaking to Sky Sports:

“It worries me because what they have done is they were a team a few years ago that we applauded – it is great how they run their club, they manage to sell good players and keep getting better. But not now and that catches up with you. In the end, what we are seeing now is if you keep selling your best players and not buying better players, you are going to be in a mess.”

Southampton have not won a Premier League game since November 26th, and they will be desperate to get their campaign back on track as soon as possible, especially after losing Van Dijk to Liverpool.

Things don’t get any easier for Pellegrino’s men, however, with a trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United next up on their agenda.
