Celtic fans are desperate for centre-back Kristoffer Ajer to be given a chance by the Scottish Premiership champions.

Celtic fans have been clamouring for young centre-back Kristoffer Ajer to be given his chance for some time - and his hopes of a place in the first-team will surely be increased if Erik Sviatchenko leaves Parkhead in January.

Despite The Hoops suffering a defensive injury crisis at times this season, not to mention the alarming dip in form suffered by Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic, Ajer has still barely featured for the first-team under Brendan Rodgers.

He was an unused sub in Sunday’s 4-0 defeat at Hearts – the 14th time this season the Norwegian has failed to make it off the bench in 2017/18. But with Celtic aiming to respond against Patrick Thistle in midweek, supporters in their droves have taken to Twitter calling for the 20-year-old to be handed a rare start.

And Ajer's hopes of securing a place in Rodgers' first-team plans will only be aided if Sviatchenko heads out of Celtic in the New Year.

According to the Scottish Sun, Celtic are open to offers of around £1.5 million for the Danish centre-back, who fell out of favour at the start of 2017 and hasn’t made a single league appearance this season – albeit largely down to injury.

Sviatchenko does not appear to be in Rodgers’ plans and his exit in the New Year may just push Ajer a little closer to the starting XI. After all, there will be one less player to overtake in the pecking order.

And, considering how highly young Ajer is rated by Celtic fans, Sviatchenko's departure might not lead to too many tears being shed on the green half of Glasgow.
