Celtic were thrashed by Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.
Celtic surrendered their 69-match unbeaten streak in disappointing fashion as Hearts put Rodgers's side well and truly to the sword at Tynecastle.
Goals from 16-year-old Harry Cochrane and former Rangers hitman Kyle Lafferty gave the hosts a shock 2-0 half-time lead, before Manuel Milinkovic added a third.
Goalkeeper Craig Gordon then conceded a needless penalty on 76 minutes which Milinkovic converted to compound Celtic's misery on a day that their astonishing record came to an end.
Fans of the Parkhead club have ripped into their side's defenders on the day, but Rodgers has suggested that right-back Lustig coped better than others.
He said via the Bhoys' Twitter page: "Defensively we struggled. The pitch wasn’t so great so Hearts weren’t building their game, they were playing a direct game.
"We failed to cope with Lafferty in that first period. He gave our two centre-halves problems.
"That’s fundamentally what you have to do to win a game, you have to be able to defend well. I thought Mikael Lustig was good but otherwise we didn’t cope so well."
