Danny Murphy and Alan Shearer have disagreed over Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey’s dismissal on Match of the Day, which was broadcast on BBC One on 13th December.

Shelvey was sent off in the last minute of Newcastle’s match against Everton last night.

The central midfielder chopped down an Everton attacker in the last minute, as he looked to stop a counter-attack, and picked up his second yellow card.

It is Shelvey’s second sending off of the season, but Murphy felt the Newcastle man was unlucky.

“I don’t think it should be two yellows,” he said. “It’s a genuine attempt to win the ball. The Everton man has done 17 rolls. The referee has shown no common sense.”

Shearer, though, felt that Shelvey could have no complaints over his sending off and offered the Newcastle man no sympathy.

“He’s on a yellow card. Whether it’s the last minute or the first, you can’t go into a tackle like that,” Shearer argued.

Shelvey has come under fierce criticism from Newcastle fans after the contest, as his ill-discipline has plagued him throughout his time at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle’s defeat to Everton now means that their winless run has been extended to eight games.

The Magpies are in 16th place in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.
