Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld delivered some news that Spurs fans will have been dreading, when speaking to reporters yesterday, explaining how he could be out of action for a further 14 weeks, if scans reveal a further tear on his injured hamstring, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

The Belgian centre-back has been out of action since Tottenham’s game at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League on November 1st, and at the time, Mauricio Pochettino speculated that he would be out for around two months.

Alderweireld, 28, has proven himself to be one of the best centre-backs in the world, since joining the Lilywhites from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, and Spurs have understandably missed him in his absence – winning just two out of the six games he has missed since injuring his hamstring.

Things could be about to get worse for Tottenham, however, following the Belgian’s latest comments.

He told the Scottish Sun:

Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur (R) with Jan Vertonghen celebrates as he scores their second goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester...

“I suffered a serious muscle tear, and there is a major risk of me suffering a relapse. If the muscle tears completely then I will need an operation, and 14 weeks of recovery time. So we are trying to find the right way of working the muscle as much as possible. I will have a scan in two weeks‘ time. We will see how much it has recovered, and how far we can push it.”

Alderweireld’s words will come as a huge blow to Tottenham fans and Pochettino, as they continue to struggle in the absence of the towering centre-back.
