Everton battered West Ham United at Goodison Park last night.

Toffees caretaker boss David Unsworth took charge of his final game last night, and raved about the performance of Wayne Rooney, highlighting how he sees the 32-year-old playing a deeper role in the long-term, as quoted by the club’s official website.

Everton were truly fantastic last night, and were far superior to West Ham, running out eventual 4-0 winners, and the former Manchester United striker took centre stage at Goodison Park.

England and Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer bagged a sensational hat-trick, including a wonder strike from his own half, bringing his tally up to eight in all competitions for the Blues since making his summer switch from Old Trafford.

And Unsworth told reporters how he knew Rooney would have a major influence on last night’s game against the Hammers, as quoted by EvertonFC.com:

“We look at the opposition in great detail and we just felt, the way West Ham have been playing, Wayne could have a major influence from a deeper role. I have spoken to him across the past five or six weeks about where he sees himself and where we can play him to get the best out of him. It is probably in a deeper role. He has a wonderful football brain. He will take the ball in any area and he ran the game, really.”

Next up for Everton is a home game against Huddersfield Town on Saturday, and with Sam Allardyce now at the helm, and Rooney firing on all cylinders, it would take a brave man to bet against the Toffees making it two Premier League wins in a row.
