Any neutrals tuning into Everton’s Premier League clash with fellow strugglers West Ham on Wednesday will have finally understood why Toffees fans were clamouring for Jonjoe Kenny to be handed his chance in the first-team.
The homegrown right-back has endured a few chastening outings in his first few months in the Everton XI, notably slicing a horrible own goal past Jordan Pickford in the 2-0 defeat to Leicester City last month.
But Kenny produced by far his finest performance in the Everton blue as former manager David Moyes returned to Goodison Park in midweek.
Seamus Coleman has been missed badly by The Toffees this season but Kenny finally emerged from the injury-stricken Irishman’s shadow. Linking up brilliantly with Aaron Lennon down the right, West Ham simply could not deal with the youngster’s boundless energy and attacking intent.
It was he who set up Wayne Rooney’s second of a stunning hat-trick and the Everton number 10, who capped a dream evening with a glorious goal from inside his own half, was arguably the only player on the pitch who outshone the relentless Kenny.
No wonder Everton fans are thrilled with his performance. A Premier League 2 winner with David Unsworth’s reserves last season, Kenny has finally shown that he can, and will, step up.
Rooney rightly gets all the plaudits for last night but a special mention for the youngsters. Kenny, Holgate, Davies and DCL all outstanding last night. Average age of just 20.— Dan EFC 1878 (@Dan_EFC1878) November 30, 2017
Gylfi Sigurdsson was the best player on the pitch tonight imo. Unreal from Rooney to. Kenny looks like a class act to— Blue cladding (@EFC26PJ) November 30, 2017
Kenny was outstanding tonight could he play on the right with coleman when he's fit. #everton— EFC (@gavjones1982) November 30, 2017
Rooney, Gylfi, Kenny all unreal tonight— Rhys (@RhysEFC) November 30, 2017
Good win tonight and pleased for Rhino, deserved that. JonJoe Kenny had his best game in the short too. Holgate good as well. Still look poor in patches that’s not going to vanish overnight but effort is what we want the most right now. #efc— Lee Mustafa (@muss_efc1878) November 29, 2017
Much better tonight. So glad Unsworth finally figured out Rooney is more suited to a deeper role these days. Kenny, Sigurdsson, Holgate and Davies all impressive too.— Sean Rothwell (@sean_efc31) November 29, 2017
Special mention for Jonjoe Kenny tonight I thought he was outstanding— Ian (@Ian_efc1878) November 29, 2017
Jonjoe Kenny showed great maturity tonight also. Something he’s got with games in the first team. Played really well.— Alan Collins (@EFCCollins) November 29, 2017
