Leeds United fans were looking up again after ending a run of six defeats in seven games with a much-needed 2-1 victory over Gary Monk’s Middlesbrough on Sunday afternoon.
Then they travelled to Wolverhampton Wanderers. And if there was any doubt about Wolves’ standing as clear promotion favourites, their 4-1 thrashing of Thomas Christiansen’s Leeds on Wednesday proved once and for all that the Midlands giants are the best side in the division by a considerable margin.
It helps, though, when you have Chinese investors funding record breaking transfers and super-agent Jorge Mendes giving you access to players with Champions League experience on their glittering CV.
While the sublime Diogo Jota and rampaging left-back Barry Douglas, scorer of a stunning first-half free-kick, will dominate the headlines, Ruben Neves once again delivered a masterful performance in front of the back four.
The most expensive player in Championship history, the one-time Porto captain showed exactly why Wolves paid £15.8 million for his services in the summer, per the BBC. And he showed exactly why some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs have been tracking him ever since he exploded onto the scene in Portugal three years ago.
And it’s fair to say Leeds fans wish they could call upon a player with Neves’ natural ability.
I don’t know how wolves managed to sign neves and cavaleiro to play in the championship but it’s an absolute master stroke.they will absolutely walk this league after taking us apart last night #lufc #wwfc— Adam Barlow (@Adam09416137) November 23, 2017

That's what you getting for spending ridiculous money, £15 million on Ruben Neves?!— Josh McHugh (@Josh_McHugh) November 22, 2017
Personally thought he controlled the game for the most part, but seen him a couple of times this season and he could easily be playing Prem football— We Are Leeds (@WeAreLeeds1919) November 23, 2017
