Barry Bannan has hit out at Sheffield Wednesday fans who booed their team against Bristol City on Saturday.
Wednesday did not register a single shot on target against the Robins, who left Hillsborough with a point after failing to convert the two of theirs.
The Owls’ best hope of scoring was arguably when Bannan went down under Hordur Magnusson’s challenge inside the box, but the Scot’s animated appeals were of no interest to referee Tony Harrington.
The home fans’ frustration was evident at full-time, and Bannan, unusually, was in no mood to acknowledge the 25,000-plus who had turned up expecting more.
Speaking to the Sun newspaper (Goals pullout, page 19) afterwards, the 27-year-old said: “Normally I would applaud the fans but not this time.
“We were out there fighting as hard as we could to find a way to win, and they were booing us. We were the only team who were going to score towards the end. We are getting better game by game.
“We went through a tough period when we suffered four defeats in five games but we’ve come out the other side.”
Bannan has been one of Wednesday’s most consistent performers this season, but was largely nullified by Bristol City’s five-man midfield on Saturday.
Carlos Carvalhal’s side are currently 10th in the Championship but only two points off the play-offs, where they have ended each of the last two campaigns.
