Newcastle United could not get the better of an impressive Manchester United team this weekend.
Newcastle United lost 4-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, but there were a few reasons for Magpies fans to be positive despite their latest setback.
Some promising performances from a number of Newcastle players suggested Rafa Benitez’s side will win more than they lose between now and May, while summer signign Jacob Murphy began to show what he is capable of after a shaky start to life at St. James’ Park.
Murphy signed for Newcastle from Norwich City in the last transfer window, yet while fellow new additions Florian Lejeune, Mikel Merino and Javier Manquilo have impressed from the outset, the former Canaries player has had to bide his time.
The 22-year-old started for Newcastle this weekend in what was his first 90-minute outing for his new side, and it was a bold move on the part of Benitez to throw him into such a tough arena and ask him to shine.
Newcastle may have fell short, overrun by a Manchester United side buoyed by the return of Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but many sides before them have failed to beat Jose Mourinho’s men on their own patch.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Newcastle fans thought of Murphy’s latest performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Murphy looked decent yesterday. #NUFC— CompleteNUFC (@CompleteNUFC) November 19, 2017
I’ll not be the only one who has criticised Murphy this season, but the lad showed confidence last night.. looked more like player Rafa wanted than previous games show. #nufc— Zak Hutchinson (@ZakHutchinson) November 19, 2017
I don’t know it. People go on about Aarons, but has has achieved nothing at NUFC so far, Murphy was one of our better performers yesterday in his first full 90mins, at Old Trafford.— Rob M (@GeordieRobM) November 19, 2017
Just saw someone having a go at Murphy; apart from a few moments of poor decision making I thought he played really well. Just no need to message him directly— Jimmy the Geordie (@nufc3_16) November 19, 2017
Looked good today, Murphy. Give the lad a break. #NUFC— Daniel (@danthompson78) November 18, 2017
Murphy played ok today. The lad has hardly played so needs game time. People writing him off already is just mad #NUFC— Ptw (@1983ptw) November 18, 2017
