Everton are reportedly vying with AC Milan for the signature of Croatian defender Domagoj Vida.

According to Croatian news outlet 24 Sata, Everton have offered a contract to Dynamo Kiev defender Domagoj Vida ahead of the January transfer window – but so have AC Milan.

The Toffees have endured a dismal season defensively, having lost six of their first 11 games this term – and manager Ronald Koeman lost his job last month.

One of the major problems Koeman faced was a lack of defensive solidity, with veterans Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka both struggling to continue as top Premier League centre backs.

Another defender may be targeted in January to partner Michael Keane, and 24 Sata in Croatia report that Everton are pursuing a deal for Dynamo Kiev's Domagoj Vida.

It's claimed that Everton have offered a contract to Vida ahead of the January transfer window, though AC Milan have done the same, meaning the centre back has the choice of two top clubs to join.

Vida, 28, joined Dynamo from Dinamo Zagreb in his native Croatia back in January 2013, penning a five-year contract – but with his deal expiring in January, he can move on for free.

A strong centre back who can also play at right back if needed, Vida had a spell with Bayer Leverkusen earlier in his career, but has now racked up 55 caps for Croatia having formed a partnership with Liverpool's Dejan Lovren.

The pair could reunite on Merseyside if Everton can tie up a deal in January, and whilst a free transfer could be a bargain for the Toffees, AC Milan will be major players for his signature.
