HITC Sport understands Northampton are set to Northern Ireland international defender.

Northern Ireland international Ryan McGivern is set to join Northampton Town on a free transfer, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

The 27-year-old defender agreed a mutual termination of his contract on transfer deadeline day with League one pacesetters Shrewsbury Town meaning he is currently a free agent.

McGivern, who has won 23 caps for Northern Ireland, is understood to have turned down a number of other offers from clubs in recent weeks to make the move to Northampton.

The former Manchester City youngster has spent the last two weeks training with the Cobblers and he has impressed Northampton boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink enough to earn a short-term deal at Sixfields.

McGivern will add versatility to Hasselbaink’s squad as he can play at left-back and centre-back as Hasselbaink looks to lift the side clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table.

Northampton have won their last two League One games to boost their survival hopes and they will be hoping to carry that form into Saturday’s FA Cup first round clash with fellow League One side Scunthorpe.
